Chrome steel is the most common material for the washers and balls of thrust bearings due to its high load capacity. These three-part thrust bearings are designed to take axial loads only. These are loads acting in parallel to the shaft. Thrust bearings cannot support radial loads.
These thrust bearings have flat washers of equal size unlike the alternative designation which have grooved washers (see Products Variants below). They are designed for low speed applications as the washers do not have a raceway. In addition, the load capacity is much lower than thrust bearings with grooved washers. These flat washer thrust bearings are usually supplied with a brass cage and are available from stock in the UK.
Chrome steel thrust bearings, with a brass retainer and a suitable lubricant, can be used at temperatures of 120°C constant or up to 150°C intermittent. Above these temperatures, the load capacity of chrome steel is reduced. These thrust bearings are not suitable for use in corrosive environments as the chrome steel washers and balls are not corrosion resistant.
Chrome steel thrust bearings are coated with a layer of preservative oil to protect against moisture. Thanks to our in-house relubrication facility, our thrust bearings can be offered with customer specified oils, greases or dry lubricants.
